I haven't made a cake in about a year, but my mother in law was visiting us during here birthday and we thought she deserved a surprise birthday celebration. Since her birthday is so close to Christmas, she hasn't had many birthday parties and definitely not many birthday cakes in her life. So we dropped both parents off at the beach and pretended like we had some house projects to do. Little did they know that we had friends invited for dinner who also had a mother visiting with a birthday and were planning a surprise :)
That was when the rush began. Clean the house! Bake a cake! Make food for dinner! Decorate! And icing the cake! We only had a few hours to pull this together... Is it possible?
Well anyone that knows me knows that I am not just going to icing a sheet cake. Nope! If I can make wedding cakes, then I wasn't going to make my mother in law a lame birthday cake. I mean geez, what would she think about that??
So, I made a huge batch of icing and began icing a two tier cake. I made a coral decorated cake a while back and that was my last minute decision for decorating this cake too. They were celebrating their birthdays on an island ;) After mixing blue and a coral color, I got started. Once I finished it looked great! Just in time to put the cake on the bar and hop in the shower.
Once I got out of the shower and fixed my hair, I heard Aaron yell "Bonnie". I knew... Without even being downstairs, I knew. i knew my cake was ruined...I forgot that Bonnie could actually sneak from the back of the couch to the top of the bar. And she likes food.... I rushed down the stairs and saw Aaron taking a big chunk out of the cake where Bonnie ate a nice slice. I was so exhausted at this point I almost started crying ( well maybe I did cry but don't judge), but then remembered that I had some leftover icing. The friends coming over also have little dogs so I piped "puppy piece" on the side we had to cut.
We grabbed a photo of Bonnie next to the cake as a memory. I wonder how much she would have eaten if we didn't catch her?
The party was a huge success and we had great food, wonderful friends, and awesome cake :) And definitely a few laughs over howuch Bonnie liked the cake too! Happy birthday Tracy!
