Harvesting Breadfruit

Breadfruit: This fruit grows on trees in the tropics and are large, round, and green. The fruit is very much like a potato and you can boil, bake, or roast the fruit. Aaron and I have made many recipes with breadfruit by simply substituting breadfruit for recipes calling for potatoes. My favorite was a baked potato soup made with breadfruit.

We have a very large breadfruit tree on the property that we are renting in Puerto Rico and it is full of fruit. The only problem is that the tree is really really tall and most of the breadfruit is more than 15 feet high. I have been known to be a monkey as a child and climbed trees like a pro, but Aaron told me that I couldn't climb the tree because he couldn't feed Penelope if I got hurt. So... Aaron put his tree climbing skills to the test and started up the tree with a pole saw.

My job was to catch the falling fruit with a large grocery bag. Of course I did not know that I was going to be catching 5-10 pound bombs of breadfruit that were leaking sap and didn't always fall straight down when I agreed to help. Yes, I would love to stare straight into the sun, catch a glimpse of a falling green bomb, and catch it in the bag. Do I get 10 points for each catch?? There were a few casualties with smashed breadfruit...

After about an hour of harvesting, we had a huge bag full of fruit. Maybe we will try to sell the fruit to a local fruit stand or have enough breadfruit to last us for a year.
