Theresa and I have had a stretch of long and stressful weeks preparing to move to Puerto Rico and rebuilding our boat for the Christmas Boat Parade. To top it off, my parents spent the last 2 weeks with us here in St. Croix. They were a big help with the remodeling we are finishing up... but.. it was time for them to go! But seriously.. after dropping mom and dad off at the airport, we decided to take the day off and load up the dogs, cooler, hammocks, paddle board, and fishing gear to spend a day at Shell Island.

For those of you who don't know, Shell Island is a tiny island off the south shore of St. Croix that was formed when a shipping channel was dredged long ago back in the 1960's. The dredged material was dumped in a big heap which is now home to birds, rats, lizards, and the occasional fishermen or wandering beach bums (like us) who happen to have a boat or kayak to make the short trip over.

Shell Island has been a big part of our life on St. Croix. We have spent numerous weekends fishing, cooking, partying, swimming, boating, and relaxing at Shell Island. On our way out to the island on this trip I started thinking about how lucky of a guy I am to be able to have experienced life like I do here in the Caribbean. Here we are, on a Monday, making our way through pristine turquoise blue water to spend the day on a uninhabited island to sunbathe, picnic, swim and play with our dogs. We are truly blessed to be able to make this life together.

We did catch a lot of sun yesterday. We also spent time paddle boarding with the dogs and got in some quality hammock time. I went out to look for lobsters but came back with a big sack full of nothing.. which is still better than a day full of working. Theresa read half of a book and we reconnected with an old friend and made some new ones when they stopped by later in the afternoon for a drink, a toke, and a picnic lunch cooked over a campfire.

Later in the afternoon a local fisherman pulled up into the bay to clean his catch of the day, about 40 pounds of conch and 14 octopus!. It was fun to watch the frigate birds dive bomb the water to eat the fisherman's octopus guts..

Meanwhile.. life continues.. I had better get back to work today and get this old house ready for the tenant.. January 16th is fast approaching and we still have a ton of work left to do.

Happy Tuesday..

My father used to tell us stories regarding the island where he used to live. He is telling about how beautiful the island is. He actually mentioned some of the days that he will go swim with his friends and try to catch some fish for their family's dinner. It was a simple life for him not until the day comes when he needs to move into a city where he knew no one. The reason why he moved is because he needs to support his family financially. It was a brave act for me. And basically, this is the reason why he met my mom and began their love story.
