The day before leaving St. Croix for Dominica, we went paddle boarding at sunset on the west end of St. Croix. Who says pregnant women can't do anything? I could tell that my balance was a little off because of my growing belly, but I was still able to paddle board and it was amazing. The next morning, we boarded a small plane and headed to Dominica. Perfect end to our short stay in St. Croix!
We have been wanting to take Buddy and Bonnie out on the paddle boards, but have been waiting for calm seas, us having energy, and their bath day to all fall on the same day. Well, the perfect day came along and we loaded up the boards and pups. Once we got to the beach, the water was not nearly as calm as it appeared from our house (far away), but since Buddy and Bonnie have been boating and kayaking with us for years, we wanted to give it a shot anyways. They did great :) Bonnie wasn't really sure about getting wet, but they seemed to enjoy it. I think that after a few times they will be expert paddle boarders :)
Freedom City Surf, a surf/paddle board shop in Frederiksted, VI had a moonlight paddle last Wednesday when the moon was full. We purchased our paddle boards from this surf shop and were really excited that we could join this event. In addition to the paddle, they had food, music and a beach fire waiting for the participants. Since we have cut down so many trees, we even donated a truckload of wood for the beach fire. After leaving work that day, we loaded up the boards and headed out West. There is nothing like watching sunsets out West. The colors are so beautiful and the water is always calm and flat. Pinks, purples, yellows, oranges, blues, and more paint the sky for these sunsets. Just amazing!
Before we hopped on our boards, I snapped this photo as all the paddlers were getting ready. There were about 35 of us and it was a lot of fun. We grouped together right at sunset and paddled around the pier. Once we got to the end of the pier, the moon was just starting to rise over the hills. And man was it amazing! The moon had an orange hue and appeared four times bigger than normal. Simply wonderful to experience from the water. After paddling back, we all enjoyed the music, food, and fire. What a wonderful way to spend a Wednesday night :) I can't wait until the next moonlight paddle.
If you are able to, I would highly recommend stopping by this shop and try out paddle boarding. The owners are amazing and learning to paddle from them is an experience. They also have shaved ice and lots of merchandise to browse through. There is never a trip out West for us that doesn't include shaved ice from the shop :)
A few weeks ago, Aaron and I went to a beach on the west side of the island and paddle boarded right at sunset. It was amazing and we were hooked! Afterwards, we decided we really needed to get paddle boards of our own so we could do this on a more regular basis. Luckily for us, the paddle board shop was selling their inventory to make room for new boards and we were able to get two used boards for the price of one new board. Sweet! Now that we have our own boards, we have been taking them down to the beach near our house at sunset after work. Simply beautiful… The sunset paints the sea, the clarity reveals another world beneath, and you are just floating along, just you, your board, and the large openness of water. You forget everything else. Work and worries no longer matter. It is simply Freedom.
